David Stegall
Former Deputy Superintendent of Schools State of North Carolina
Dr. David Stegall is joining the Department of Defense, Education, Activity, from North Carolina, where he has served in several roles in education. David previously served as Deputy Superintendent of Innovation and Chief Academic Officer for the NC Department of Public Instruction. In this role, during the COVID-19 pandemic, NC Governor Roy Cooper named Dr. Stegall co-chair of the statewide COVID-19 Education and Nutrition Response Work Group. In June of 2020, Dr. Stegall co-led the development of the statewide school re-opening guidebook and support documents for K-12 public schools. David previously served as the Vice President for Global Education Management Systems in the Middle East, North Africa, and South Asia regions of the world. Prior to his tenure working abroad, Dr. Stegall served as the Superintendent for Newton-Conover Schools. Stegall helped develop a national award-winning STEM school, a national award-winning Leader in Me school, a state-recognized personalized learning school and a successful dual-language school, among other accomplishments. Dr. Stegall was named the NW North Carolina Superintendent of the Year in 2017 and a national Superintendent to Watch in 2016. In 2021 he was awarded the North Carolina Champion for Children Award by the NC Association of School Administrators and was previously named the Outstanding Young Educator for North Carolina in 2012.

We all are part of this team. Every voice matters. If you know something, say something. If you have a way to connect us to a solution, bring it forward. There is no hierarchy in this group. We serve school districts. They serve the students.’ There was a lot of bluntness, but because of the relationship and trust. I think that helped a lot.”
